How to Create a Living Vision Board

By Audrey Seymour

Have you ever made a vision board? Many of us have made a collage that expresses our dreams, only to have it grow stale. We put it away in the closet and it's never seen again.

The style of vision board popularized by the DVD The Secret is similar to a collage, and if you use that method, when you want to update it you'll need to start from scratch and create a new one.

Imagine instead having a collage that stays fresh and inspiring whenever you look at it - because it evolves in order to stay that way. This style of vision board is nothing more than a "living collage" that reminds you of your dreams every day. You just use a standard corkboard as the canvas and pushpins as the glue.

The first step is to collect all of the ideas, images and pieces of the puzzle that contribute to your dream. Magazines have traditionally been the best source for photos, and now online search is available with a virtually unlimited supply of images. You'll also want to pull out your business card collection, and other special items such as favorite quotes and inspiring articles.

Suppose you want to become a financial counselor to use your analytic skills and help others realize their goals. You dream of doubling your income and buying a vacation home on a lake.

In the above example, your vision board might have a picture of a serene lake with birds flying overhead. A snapshot of your mentor could be there. Several dollar signs would be sprinkled throughout. Imagine arranging business cards of your creative allies artfully, along with inspirational phrases on sticky notes -- "Holding your fear with compassion and courage" -- "Conscious investing" -- "Women in transition" -- "$500K in the bank". A brochure for a training course and an article about financial trends hang from pins in the corners. Imagine how it would feel to spend regular time with your future in this way.

The most important things about your vision board is that it be kept fresh and visible. Put it where you'll see it every day. As soon as you notice that it's no longer catching your eye, it's time to sit down and update it.

When you work with your vision board, first look to see which elements on it feel stale, if any. Remove them to make room for something new. If all of the ingredients still carry meaning for you, then simply change their physical placement on the board. Then decide what aspects call out to be added, to bring your latest joy to the mix.

The more senses you bring to your vision, the more you become the instrument that knows immediately when you are on course. Obstacles become easier to uncover when you compare your life to your living vision board. Foster that relationship, and a direct path to your dream becomes clear!
